It has just been reported that Queen Elizabeth [1] will likely remain in self-isolation “for months” and that she may never return to her regular frontline duties.
Daily Mail [2] reported that the 94 year-old Queen may not be allowed to return to her regular public duties “for years” to come due to the risk of her contracting coronavirus. Royal biographer Andrew Morton told The Sun [3] that he is afraid that the Queen, who is self-isolating at Windsor Castle with her 98 year-old husband Prince Philip, will never return to her public duties and will only be seen on television going forward.
“It’s terribly sad but I can’t see how the Queen can resume her usual job,” Morton said. “The COVID-19 virus isn’t going away soon and will be with us for months, if not years. It would be far too risky for the Queen to start meeting people on a regular basis.”
The royal biographer added that while the Queen enjoys meeting the public, doing this would put both her and her husband’s health at serious risk.
This comes hours after a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace said that the Queen has been staying “busy” in quarantine, meeting with Prime Minister Boris Johnson weekly by phone and receiving her daily red boxes of Government papers. The spokeswoman added that the Queen will “follow appropriate advice on engagements” and is keeping in touch with her family via phone and video calls.
“The Queen won’t do anything which goes against the advice of people in her [age] category and she’s going to take all the appropriate advice… she’d want to be seen to be being responsible in her actions,” a royal source said.
The Queen mentioned COVID-19 when she gave a speech on VE Day, which marked the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
“We know that coronavirus will not overcome us,” she said. “When I look at our country today, and see what we are willing to do to protect and support one another, I say with pride that we are still a nation those brave soldiers, sailors and airmen would recognize and admire. “
The Queen added, “Never give up, never despair – that was the message of VE Day.”
