Minneapolis Cop Involved in George Floyd’s Death Is Moved to Maximum-Security Prison as Wife Files for Divorce

Derek Chauvin is the former Minneapolis police officer who was filmed kneeling on the neck of George Floyd before he died in police custody a week ago. Chauvin has since been arrested for his murder, and it has just been revealed that he has been transferred to a maximum security prison as his wife has also filed for divorce. [1]

Fox News [2] reported that Chauvin has been moved to Oak Park Heights prison, which is a maximum-security facility in Minnesota. This was confirmed by Paul Schnell, the commissioner of the state’s department of corrections, who said that Chauvin was initially booked at the Ramsey County Jail on a third-degree murder charge on Sunday before being released at 8:48 p.m. to other state authorities.

Schnell added that these kind of high-profile transfers are not uncommon.

Benjamin Crump, a lawyer representing the Floyd family, spoke out on Sunday to say that Chauvin should be charged with first-degree murder.

“We think that he had intent based on, not the one minute, two minute, but over eight minutes, almost nine minutes he kept his knee in a man’s neck that was begging and pleading for breath,” Crump said. “George Floyd died because of the knee being shoved into his neck, and he could not breathe.”

The hits just kept on coming for Chauvin, as his former beauty queen wife Kellie, who he had been married to for ten years, filed for divorce.

“Her utmost sympathy lies with [Floyd’s] family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy,” Kellie said in a statement released by her spokesperson. “While Ms. Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.”

During his time at the Ramsey County Jail, it was reported that Chauvin was on suicide watch. The report stated that the disgraced former cop was being held in a secluded area of the prison and was being checked on by guards every fifteen minutes.

The three other officers involved in Floyd’s death have all been fired, and calls are growing for them to face charges as well.
