Everyone has their views on masks. Some swear by them, and some have dismissed them, including parts of the medical community.  However, rather than mind one’s own business, we have seen a steady rise in altercations occurring in public as pro-maskers attempt to play “mask-police.”

We have seen individuals pepper-sprayed for not wearing a mask, hot coffee has been thrown in a man’s face and multiple fist fights, all because someone had a different opinion on the extremely divisive topic.

Now, a Tennessee politician is trying to take the craziness to a whole new level.  Sharon Hunt, who serves on the Nashville Metro Council, has suggested that individuals that do no wear a mask and spread the coronavirus should be charged with attempted murder.

She made her suggestion during a recent city meeting and said the following:

“My question goes back to legislation. I don’t know if Mike Jameson could be the one to answer the question, but my concern is — you know I work for an organization, that if they pass a virus, then they are tried for murder or attempted murder, if they are not told … and this person who may very well pass this virus that’s out in the air because they’re not wearing a mask is basically doing the same thing to someone who contracts it and dies from it.”

“It seems to me that we have been more reactive, as opposed to proactive, and a little too late, too little. So, my thing is, maybe there should be legislation, stronger legislation, I don’t know if Mike Jameson is… can speak to it, but maybe there needs to be stronger legislation to say that if you do not wear a mask and you subject exposure of this virus to someone else then there will be some stronger penalty as it is in other viruses that are exposed.”

Ultimately Hunt was shut down and informed that the council had no such authority to create laws of that magnitude, but rest assured she is not the only politician pushing for such strict measures. This debate will rage on for months to come, and certainly through the election. So settle in for more chaos and ill-minded suggestions by politicians who are either scared themselves, or pushing fear in order to control the public.

Still, to be clear, whether you support masks or not, if your local municipality declares them mandatory we strongly suggest you do the kind and legal thing, wear a mask. But more importantly, we suggest that everyone just respect other individual’s ability to have different opinions, even if their actions go against local regulations or what you are comfortable with. Just worry about yourself.
