The statement “make your bed now lay in it” is starting to sink in for a sorority sister after she was charged with crimes connected to riots near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Tired of watching cities burn around America, the judge didn’t hold back on the Franklin & Marshall College Kappa Delta sister when he set her bail to a staggering $1 million.

Facing felony and misdemeanor charges, 20-year-old Kathryn Patterson is accused of rioting, arson, vandalism, and disorderly conduct. According to witnesses, Patterson was participating in an active protest over the shooting of Ricardo Munoz. To recall, Munoz was shot during an altercation with police when he chased the officer with a knife. Feeling threatened, the officer discharged his weapon, killing Mr. Munoz.

As for the $1 million bail, Patterson’s father is not only calling the amount obscene but downright unconstitutional. Chip Patterson of Mercersburg told reporters, “I cannot tell you how long this night has been. I think regardless of what these people did or didn’t do, the bail amount is just outrageous and clearly against the Eighth Amendment.” For those unaware, the Eighth Amendment was put in place to stop judges from using excessive bails.

Defenders of Patterson are calling the charges lies as they claim the student wasn’t part of the riots but simply acting as a medic. It should be noted, many of the people arrested at these protests claim they were acting as a medic while having no training or medical expertise whatsoever, but back to Patterson. Since her charges, friends and family have set up a GoFundMe page for her legal defense.

Last Wednesday, Franklin & Marshall's Kappa Delta sorority features one its sisters in a recruitment post on how KD helped her "grow exponentially as a person."

Gaining momentum from fellow sororities and advocacy groups like the Black Student Union and Lancaster Stand Up, the page has already amassed $54,000 of the $60,000 goal. For Lancaster Stand Up, the bail is more than money – it is “a politically motivated attack on the movement for police reform and accountability.”

Among Patterson, eight other people were arrested after Monday night’s riots and charged. It is unclear if Patterson was the only one to receive such a high bail.
