Returning to campus this fall, students of Washington and Lee University will have the chance to learn about American history, English, arithmetic, and “How to Overthrow a State.” You read that right.

As riots continue to rage on in Portland, educators at the university see it as a great time to teach the youth about Marxist Revolutions in the South, but there’s more. The class will also allow students to have hands-on experience with role-playing scenarios.

Classified under Writing Seminar 100-18, the class will reward each student with 3 credits toward graduating and, “places each student at the head of a popular revolutionary movement aiming to overthrow a sitting government and forge a better society. How will you attain power? How will you communicate with the masses? How do you plan on improving the lives of the people? How will you deal with the past?”

The description of the class also gives examples of what type of exercises students would be participating in. “Students participate in a variety of writing exercises, such as producing a Manifesto, drafting a white paper that critically analyzes a particular issue, and writing a persuasive essay on rewriting history and confronting memory.”

While it is important to study history so one is not willing to repeat it, there is a call for concern when a university encourages its students to practice overthrowing the state using a variety of tactics. Several conservatives quickly jumped on the defense, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. He tweeted, “Washington and Lee University’s course on ‘how to overthrow the state’ is one further sign of the insanity taking over higher education. The alumni should rise up and show how to overthrow a crazy college administration.”

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk had a stern warning when he discussed the issue with Breitbart News. “We must stop brushing aside these egregious examples of campus craziness as isolated incidents. The lessons of the past few months prove that these ideas don’t stay on campus, they spill out onto the streets. This is a prime example of the intellectual rot that has infected the academy in America. The Trump administration should investigate and determine if this is the type of scholarship federal funds should be used to subsidize.”

This isn’t the first time Washington and Lee University has come under scrutiny. In July, the university’s faculty voted to remove the confederate leader, Robert E. Lee’s name from the university. While many democrats and leftists praised the move, university law proved their downfall as only the institution’s trustees have the power to change the name and they have yet to vote on the matter.
