According to Susan Shaw, a professor at Oregon State University, “White Christians” are the reason there are wildfires in the West Coast. Shaw claims that White Christians deny climate change.

“For now, the West is burning while most white Christians turn away from the root causes of the devastation. Many white Christians believe God won’t let climate change destroy the earth. Others see climate-related disasters as signs of the end times. White evangelicals continue to support Donald Trump overwhelmingly, even though the Trump administration has tried to roll back more than 100 environmental protection regulations. As of this writing, Trump has offered no words of consolation or support to the West.”

Reportedly, the Trump administration has continued to try and roll back more than 100 environmental protection regulations. Shaw adds that White Christians surprisingly continue to support him even though he is trying to take away environmental protection.

Shaw is very critical of Trump and anyone who supports him. “The inability of so many white Christians to hear the urgency of climate science suggests the depth to which the white church is invested in white supremacy. Poor people of color are both the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change and the ones who contribute least to greenhouse gases.”

Shaw claims that the issue is “one of whiteness” and that “White Christians” will have to change. “For now, the white church is mostly complicit with the intersecting systems of racism and global capitalism that underlie climate change.”

According to Shaw, she admits that “fire suppression policies have created a problem that is ripe for climate change to lead to these kinds of fires that are unlike what we’ve seen before.”

Shaw states that “we can’t continue to delay climate change.” Even after blaming White Christians for denying climate change, she then adds that “the doomsday clock has moved closer in January 2020 because of climate change according to atomic scientists.”
