In an interview with late night television host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night, Barack Obama revealed that he went against Michelle’s wishes when he ran for president, adding that he’s still in the “dog house” for doing it.

While promoting his new memoir “Promised Land,” Obama joked that Michelle has never truly forgiven him for running for president.

“Her initial response was ‘No,'” Obama said of the moment he told her that he might run. “What I said to her, ‘We still need to think through all the different elements of it and if at the end of that you still say no, then it’s a no.'”

“And she sort of changed her mind, kind of,” he continued. “But, what is absolutely true is — and I’ve never fully got out of the dog house for this — is that I put her and our kids through an extraordinarily stressful, difficult sequence in deciding to run for president, right after I had just gone through a tough race.”

“Michelle stayed angry at me about it,” he said, adding that “it would flare up every so often, but she stayed mad about it through all eight years.”

Obama then joked that Michelle had eventually forgiven him “until this interview.”

In an excerpt of his book that was obtained by CNN, Obama admitted that his presidency took a toll on his marriage. He wrote that he could “sense an undercurrent of tension” in his wife during their time as president and First Lady.

“Despite Michelle’s success and popularity, I continued to sense an undercurrent of tension in her, subtle but constant, like the faint thrum of a hidden machine,” Obama wrote. “It was as if, confined as we were within the walls of the White House, all her previous sources of frustration became more concentrated, more vivid, whether it was my round the clock absorption with work, or the way politics exposed our family to scrutiny and attacks, or the tendency of even friends and family members to treat her role as secondary in importance.”

He added that there were nights when “lying next to Michelle in the dark, I’d think about those days when everything between us felt lighter, when her smile was more constant and our love less encumbered, and my heart would suddenly tighten at the thought that those days might not return.”
