Buckingham Palace officially only would say that this is “a deeply personal matter which we would not comment on.”

Sources told Vanity Fair that Meghan wanted to open up about her miscarriage in an op-ed for The New York Times because she and Prince Harry wanted to encourage others talk about their miscarriages.

“They decided that they wanted to talk about this and that this was the right time to do so,” a friend close to Meghan and Harry said. “There’s a tone of hopefulness and optimism at the end of the article which I think shows where they are today. They are doing well.”

Sources added that this experience brought Harry and Meghan even closer, and that he supported her in writing the op-ed.

Harry’s uncle Earl Charles Spencer, the brother of the late Princess Diana, said that “all” of his thoughts are with the couple during this difficult time.

“I can’t imagine the agony for any couple losing a child in this way and it’s so very, very sad,” he said.

Meghan wrote in her op-ed that she and Harry only learned of how common miscarriages were after she miscarried.

“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few. In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage,” she wrote. “Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning.”

“Some have bravely shared their stories; they have opened the door, knowing that when one person speaks truth, it gives license for all of us to do the same,” Meghan added. “We have learned that when people ask how any of us are doing, and when they really listen to the answer, with an open heart and mind, the load of grief often becomes lighter — for all of us. In being invited to share our pain, together we take the first steps toward healing.”
