Last month, we reported [1] that a former staffer at Buckingham Palace had been arrested for stealing up to $130,000-worth of items from the palace before selling them on eBay. Now, he has learned his fate as to what his punishment for this crime will be.
Fox News [2] reported that former Buckingham Palace catering assistant Adam Canto, 37, was sentenced to eight months in prison this week after pleading guilty to three counts of theft between November 2019 and August 2020 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. He reportedly stole a “significant quantity” of items, which were later found by police at his quarters in the palace’s Royal Mews.
Items that were stolen by Canto included a royal state banquet photo album of President Donald Trump’s visit to the United Kingdom and signed official photographs of Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Canto allegedly stole 77 items from the palace shop, with others being stolen from staff lockers and Prince Andrew’s storeroom. He also confessed to stealing “a Companion of Bath medal belonging to the Master of the Household, Vice Admiral Master Tony Johnstone-Burt; and a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order medal from the locker of former British Army officer Maj Gen Richard Sykes, which was given to him by Queen Elizabeth, 94, in 2010.”
Prosecutor Simon Maughan told the court that the items stolen by Canto were between $13,000 and $135,000, and they were then put up for sale on eBay. However, 37 of the goods taken by Canto were sold for “well under” on the site, as he only earned a total of $10,000 from the sales.
Canto was given more access to offices and other rooms in the palace that he wasn’t typically allowed in because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and he took full advantage of this in carrying out his crimes. Staffers at Buckingham Palace are employed by the Royal Collection Trust, the charity that runs the opening of the palaces and its accompanying stores.
The Queen has not been at Buckingham Palace since March, as the 94 year-old monarch has been isolating at Windsor Castle with her 99 year-old husband, Prince Philip. She has yet to comment publicly about Canto or the crimes that he has committed.
