There was something always Mussolini smarmy about the Cuomo brothers. Like two punk heads of a crime family who knew they were untouchable because they had bought all the judges. And in a sense they had. The media and the leftist voting majority of New York state had long ago bought into the proposition that massive liberal government was the natural order of things. It had been done with more panache by Roosevelt and Rockefeller and had been tested with the Fredo twins, but the basic principle remained intact. The Cuomos were safe.

Until now.

On Monday, President’s Day, it was ironic to watch a man who will never be president hold a press conference. He hemmed and hawed and tried to evade responsibility. But some of the liberal media have turned against him. For politicians like Cuomo, that’s always the beginning of the end. Rep. Elise Stefanik, Republican of New York, puts it well.

“The dam is breaking, you’re seeing overwhelming bipartisan outcry. Democrats need to grow a spine and stand up for what’s right.” She called Cuomo “the worst governor in America” in dealing with the pandemic.

She continued, “You have both Democrats and Republicans calling for an independent investigation. I want to see subpoenas both at the state level, the State Senate and State Assembly should issue subpoenas immediately, and I want the Department of Justice to launch an independent investigation. We know from the partial transcript that was released by the secretary to the governor that there was obstruction of justice. This is not about politics but people’s lives.

“What was so shameful about the transcript that was released was the secretary to the governor didn’t apologize for the number of deaths, didn’t apologize for the policy, but apologized for the political fallout for Democrats. It’s a disgrace. President Biden needs to keep to his promise that the Department of Justice will be independent from political pressure from Governor Cuomo, who is a Democrat. But to the Department of Justice and law enforcement, this prosecution needs to go forward immediately.”

Republicans like Stefanik can smell the blood in the water. It will come gradually, but Andrew Cuomo is a political corpse. At CNN, his brother may not be too far behind.
