At least 15 people are dead after a Ford Expedition SUV with 27 passengers collided with a semi-truck near the United States-Mexico border this morning.

Authorities say they responded to the incident at 6:16AM when a truck containing gravel crashed into the SUV on Route 115 near Holtville, California.  Holtville is 10 miles north of the border.

“We believe there was 27 passengers in this SUV that struck a semi truck full of gravel,” emergency room managing director Judy Cruz said. She later said 14 victims died at the scene, and 1 died at the hospital.

Multiple victims were transported to the hospital for treatment. Imperial County Fire officials said multiple agencies were responding to the crash and assisting with the incident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
