During an interview on Tuesday, former First Lady Michelle Obama reacted to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey by taking what appeared to be a thinly veiled swipe at the couple.

While appearing on the “Today” show, Michelle was asked by Jenna Bush Hager what she thought about the interview.

“When you watched Meghan Markle speak out, what went through your mind?” Bush Hager asked.

“Public service it’s a bright, sharp, hot spotlight and most people don’t understand it nor should they,” Michelle said, before she took what many are perceiving as a swipe at the couple.

“The thing that I always keep in mind is that none of this is about us, in public service, it’s about the people that we serve,” she said. “I always try to push the light back out and focus it on the folks that we’re actually here to serve.”

Many have interpreted this to mean that Michelle was saying that Meghan and Harry need to focus more on helping others, instead of making situations all about themselves.

Bush Hager then responded by saying, “But what about when she talked about the fact that she experienced racism? I mean I feel like that was heartbreaking to hear that she felt like she was in her own family, her own family, thought differently of her.”

“Race isn’t a new construct in this world, for people of color. So it wasn’t a complete surprise to, sort of, hear her feelings and have them articulated,” Michelle replied. “The thing that hope for and the thing that I think about is that this first and foremost is a family and I pray for forgiveness and healing for them so they can use his as a teachable moment for them all.”

During their interview, Meghan claimed that she was hit with racism from within the royal family, claiming that an unnamed senior royal questioned how dark her then-unborn son Archie’s skin would be. Harry refused to name this family member, only saying that it was neither Queen Elizabeth nor Prince Philip. Meghan also claimed that she felt so isolated as a royal that she considered committing suicide at one point during her pregnancy.

The royal family responded two days later in a brief statement released by Buckingham Palace.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the royal family said in a statement obtained by Fox News. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
