Officer Buys Stray Dog The Purple Unicorn He Kept Sneaking Into A Store To Steal Before Taking Him To Shelter

Animal control officers in Kenansville, North Carolina received a hilarious call from a local Dollar General store last week. Joe Newburn is a supervisor at Duplin County Animal Services and said the call was one of the strangest he has ever had to deal with.

According to store workers, a stray dog kept running into the store every time the door opened and headed straight to the toy aisle, where it tried to abscond with a $10 purple stuffed unicorn. Each time the dog was shooed out of the store, it managed to sneak back in when another customer exited the building.

“He went straight for the unicorn, the same one every time,” Newburn shared with PEOPLE [1].

After repeated failed attempts to keep the dog out of the store, workers finally locked the doors and called animal control. When officer Samantha Lane arrived on the scene, she went into the store and purchased the stuffed animal for the persistent pooch, who then happily allowed Lane to load hi into her truck to be transported to the local animal shelter.

Shelter workers named the 1-year-old lab mix Sisu, which is the name of the dragon from Disney’s latest movie Raya and the Last Dragon. The shelter then took pictures of the pup and posted his bio on their Facebook page with a caption that said:

“This is what happens when you break into the Dollar General consistently to steal the purple unicorn that you laid claim to but then get animal control called to lock you up for your B & E and larceny but the officer purchases your item for you and brings it in with you.”

Sisu is currently labeled as a stray since no one has come forward to claim him as of yet, but the shelter believes he has definitely had significant human interaction, and that his attachment to the purple unicorn is likely due to it’s resemblance to a similar stuffed animal in his former home.

“It’s so sweet. It’s amazing. I mean, he’s obviously super smart, and even when we got him to the animal shelter, he’s been very obedient. He sits, shakes. Someone should be looking for him,” Newburn says. “I don’t know of any other reason why he would focus on the unicorn other than he had one at home. If the store had called and said he tore open dog food, that would make more sense but not hunting for a purple unicorn.”

Dollar General spokesperson Crystal Luce told PEOPLE that the company plans on donating spare unicorns for Sisu’s new family to keep on hand. There will also be a donation of pet food made to the Duplin County Animal Services, along with a “thank-you” gift for officer Lane.
