Jury selection begins today in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis Police Officer charged in the death of George Floyd. Selection is expected to take at least three weeks, and is considered to be one of the most important phases of the trial as the defense attempts to remove any jurors who may be biased.
Minneapolis is tense once again as the community braces for possible unrest based on the trial results. The defense has argued they would not be able to find a fair jury in Hennepin County, but Judge Peter Cahill refused to move the trial, saying “no corner of the State of Minnesota” has been shielded from pretrial publicity.

Jurors have been screened using questionnaires to determine how much they have heard about the case, demographic information, prior contacts with police, whether they have protested against police “brutality”, and whether they believe the justice system is fair. Questions also asked if potential jurors have watched the video of Floyd’s arrest.
Opening statements in the trial are not expected to begin until March 29th at the earliest.
