Brooklyn Center Fatal Police Shooting Bodycam Released: Here’s What We KNOW

Brooklyn Center, MN. – A fatal police shooting has sparked a new round of rioting in the Minneapolis area. The family of the person shot by police have identified him as 20-year-old Daunte Wright.

In a statement [1], Brooklyn Center Police said that officers had stopped an individual shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday. Officers determined the driver had an outstanding warrant, police tried to arrest him but he re-entered the vehicle. One officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver. The vehicle traveled several blocks before striking another vehicle.  Officers who were in pursuit attempted life-saving measures on the suspect, but he died at the scene. A female passenger was injured in the crash and transported to the hospital.  Brooklyn Center is just north of Minneapolis.

During a press conference today, Brooklyn Center Police Department Chief Tim Gannon said he believed the shooting was possibly an accidental discharge, and that he believed the officer meant to draw a taser, not a firearm.

The bodycam was just released from this shooting:

While police were still on the scene investigating the incident, protestors started arriving at the scene.

The violence triggered the activation of at least  500 Minnesota National Guard personnel across the Twin Cities area.

Minnesota Democrat Governor Tim Walz wasted no time to weigh in on Twitter, saying “I am closely monitoring the situation in Brooklyn Center. Gwen and I are praying for Daunte Wright’s family as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement.”

During a press conference, Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said that about 20 businesses had been broken into at the city’s Shingle Creek shopping center and that looting occurred.

Fox 9 Minneapolis reported a police headquarters in another neighboring city of Brooklyn Park was “shot up” around 8 p.m. They said multiple rounds were fired through the building’s glass front doors, but no injuries were reported.
