A “top secret” study that was carried out by a renowned federal research institution last year found that COVID-19 could have originated and leaked from a Chinese laboratory.

The study, which had never been disclosed publicly until now, was conducted by researchers within the intelligence division at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This is considered to be the Department of Energy’s premier biodefense research institution, according to Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Issued on May 27, 2020, the study “assessed that both the lab-origin theory and the zoonotic theory were plausible and warranted further investigation.” While Sinclair admitted to not having read the conclusion of the study, the publication talked to multiple sources who either read it or were briefed on it.

A spokesperson for Livermore confirmed that the study existed, but refused to go into any further detail, telling Sinclair “Because the report you are referring to is classified, it would be inappropriate for our lab to discuss this.”

This comes a month after Avril Haines, the new director of national intelligence, testified that the U.S. intelligence community is actively investigating both theories.

“We have two plausible theories that we are working on that components within the intelligence community have essentially coalesced around. One of them is that it was a laboratory accident, and the other is that it emerged naturally from human contact with infected animals,” she said.

The fact that the study concluded that coronavirus may have originated and leaked from a Chinese laboratory directly contradicts recent reports from World Health Organization investigators. Earlier this year, a WHO-Chinese team of investigators concluded that it was “extremely unlikely” that COVID-19 leaked from a lab in China, but members of U.S. intelligence have long questioned the integrity of this probe.

Sir Richard Dearlove, who was head of Britain’s MI6 from 1999 until 2004, called the World Health Organization’s probe a “farcical investigation. He argued that COVID-19 was “far more likely” to have come from a lab than to have jumped from animals to humans.

It’s clear that regardless of where exactly COVID-19 came from, we need some serious answers from China on this. Here’s hoping we get them.
