While New York Governor Andrew Cuomo continues to avoid the major role he played in the COVID-19 pandemic, he apparently believes there is another crisis much more dire that threatens the lives of his citizens. On Tuesday, Cuomo emerged from the shadows to declare a “disaster emergency”, but it had nothing to do with COVID-19. In fact, Cuomo doesn’t seem all that worried about the virus as he is now tackling gun violence.

Just over the July 4th weekend, over 50 people were shot in New York compared to the 13 people who died from the COVID-19 virus. Reiterating the death statistics, Cuomo announced his plans to combat the violence.”Today I am issuing an Executive Order declaring a Disaster Emergency on gun violence. Gun violence is a public health crisis, and we must treat it like one. This declaration will allow us to give this crisis the full attention & resources it deserves.”

During his press conference, Cuomo didn’t take responsibility for the uptick in violence, especially when Democrats continue to support defunding the police. Instead, Cuomo blamed the surge in violence on surrounding states with relaxed gun laws. He also insisted, “We wasted so much time and money in this nation fighting illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is not killing Americans. Illegal guns are killing Americans.”

The governor also tweeted his plan to combat the violence – of course, it involved using the same police he wants to defund. The New York State Police “will form a new Gun Trafficking Interdiction Unit to stop the flood of illegal guns coming into NY from states with weak gun laws.”

Acting as if COVID-19 is no longer a problem, Cuomo persisted, “Gun violence is a major civil rights issue today. Yes, education, yes employment, yes discrimination, but also gun violence. Gun violence is hitting the black and brown communities hardest and it’s compounding the damage from COVID.”

Labeling the violence in his state as an “epidemic”, the Democratic governor was sure to add that the crime could be solved if people would want it to.”If you can beat COVID, you can beat gun violence, you can beat poverty, you can beat drug abuse, you can beat whatever you wanna beat. We just have to want to do it. It’s a matter of life and death also.”
