California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) wants to force taxpayers in his state to pay a staggering $16.7 million in “cash assistance” to refugees from Afghanistan.

“The Governor, with support from legislative leaders, is requesting $16.7 million in general funds, which will be used to provide cash assistance and other services for newly arriving Afghans in the state,” Newsom’s office said in a statement obtained by The Gateway Pundit.

Newsom doubled down on this in a statement of his own.

“I am proud that California has been and always will be a place of refuge for those seeking safety or a better life – especially for those who served our country, like many of the Afghan refugees coming to America and California,” said Newsom. “Today’s announcements and request for funding signal that California stands ready to assist those in need. As the nation’s most diverse state, we don’t simply tolerate diversity; we celebrate it.”

Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon is a big fan of making taxpayers fund these payments to the refugees.

“California has long been a beacon for international refugees seeking safety and a better life,” said Rendon. “I need to look no further than my wife’s family to know how true this is. But adjusting to a new culture poses an incredible challenge for thousands of people.”

“The Legislature has already proposed funding to support Afghan refugees – we have the funds to help,” he added. “With this modest but important step, we can help ensure that refugees fleeing Afghanistan have the tools they need to successfully rebuild their lives in California.”

Senate President pro Tempore Atkins supports this plan of Newsom’s as well.

“These refugees gave our service members help in Afghanistan, and it is only fitting we give them hope when they come to California,” Atkins stated. “When I was growing up, the golden rule was that no matter how little you had, you help those in need. We are blessed to be in a position in California where we have enough funding to help ease these refugees’ transition into our society, and I am pleased the state is joining with so many other organizations and individuals who are doing the right thing.”

California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly also think it’s a good idea.

“We welcome our new neighbors from Afghanistan with open arms and are grateful for the many community-based organizations across the state who have stepped up to provide services with empathy and compassion,” said Ghaly. “Today, we further our commitment of inclusion by marshaling federal and state resources to further support the resettlement of Afghan families into our communities.”

This plan of Newsom’s is a prime example of why there is currently a recall effort that is being leveled against them. He has repeatedly failed the people of California and shamelessly used their hard-earned tax dollars to fund his own radically liberal agenda. California voters should take notice and recall Newsom next week before he can take any more of their tax dollars away and put them in the hands of foreign refugees.
