While many Americans are still hesitant about the COVID-19 vaccine due to conflicting data and reports, it appears President Joe Biden is continuing to push forward when it comes to mandates. Although there is still much to learn about both the virus and vaccine, it appears the producers of the Pfizer vaccine, BioNTech, will be requesting clearance to start vaccinating children five and older. And if that wasn’t already sounding alarms, the company is also eager to start making smaller doses for younger children.

As of now, the vaccine is approved for children 12 and older, but the company is apparently moving forward, hoping to be approved to vaccinate children as young as 5. Stating that they have” let the science and data guide us,” the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Janet Woodcock and Dr. Peter Marks said they were “eager to see our children and grandchildren vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.”
The FDA went on to state the process of being allowed to vaccinate young children. “Once the manufacturers complete the relevant portion of their clinical trials, they have to complete the analysis of the data from the studies to understand how safe the vaccine is and how well it works in the clinical trial participants.”
And when exactly will the results for the vaccine trials be available? According to Pfizer board member Dr. Scott Gottlieb, “If the FDA sticks to its normal timeline, in terms of how it reviews these applications, you would expect that review to be a four to six-week review for a potential emergency use authorization, so that puts you on a timeline where you’re late fall, early winter.”
Although just an estimate, Gottlieb added that the FDA might be forced to accelerate the process due to increasing infections in children. “If we continue to see these accelerating rates of infections in kids, particularly as the delta variant moves to the Northeast, I think there could be more pressure to try and make an earlier authorization for a vaccine.”
