SecDef Austin Stonewalls Congress Over Afghanistan

Since January 6th we’ve heard about the constitutional implications of a Capitol Hill riot by a group of slack-jawed idiots. They were not armed, had no central command, and had no plans to launch an insurrection or uprising to take over the government.

But today we have the two heads of the Biden defense team, the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who command the world’s strongest armed forces, openly defying the executive and legislative branches of government. In January General Mark Milley usurped executive power in communicating with the Chinese behind the back of then President Trump and Acting Secretary of Defense Miller. Now Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin refuses to testify before Congress on the Afghanistan disaster.

This is verging on Bonapartism and is the most serious military insubordination to civilian authority perhaps in the history of the republic. And where are all those who screamed coup and insurrection in January? Where are they who said America was threatened by a gaggle of ignorant louts on a spree? Nowhere, when a real mutiny, a real silent coup, presents itself. They position themselves on the sides of the insurgents. Well, one Senator, surprisingly a Democrat, won’t take this from Austin.

FNC: “Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez, D-N.J., expressed his disappointment that Defense Secretary Gen. Lloyd Austin did not accept the committee’s invitation to testify at a hearing dealing with the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and threatened to take action if he continued not to cooperate.

In his opening remarks at that hearing, at which Secretary of State Antony Blinken appeared, Menendez said that Austin’s testimony is necessary in order for the committee to fully examine what happened in Afghanistan.”

“I’m very disappointed that Secretary Austin declined our request to testify today,” Menendez said. “A full accounting of the U.S. response to this crisis is not complete without the Pentagon, especially when it comes to understanding the complete collapse of the U.S.-trained and funded Afghan military. And if he does not,” Menendez warned, “I may consider the use of committee subpoena power to compel him and others over the course of these last 20 years to testify.”
