With schools districts around America debating if students should be mandated to wear masks while in class, apparently, one Las Vegas substitute teacher took it upon herself to enforce her own mandate when she supposedly “taped” masks onto fourth-grade children.

The event is said to have taken place at Reedom Elementary School in Mountain’s Edge. Speaking to reporters, the mother of a 9-year-old boy, who wishes to keep her identity a secret, was shocked when she learned the news. “I was furious, furious. I was scared for my son on what kind of long-term effect it is going to have on him socially, the fact that the entire class was laughing.” 

According to the mother, her son “went to get a sip of water, forgot to put the mask on. The teacher did not tell him to put it back on or send him to the office, she instead pulled him up in front of the classroom in front of all of the students and she then taped the mask across the top of his face.”

Crushed by the pain her son had to go through, the mother is calling for the teacher to resign, saying “He was very upset. He was crying. He was humiliated.”

While making headlines, the school district is treating the teacher’s actions as an “isolated incident.” They also released a statement saying, “The district is aware of the isolated incident and is dealing with the employee through the proper channels. The principal proactively notified the family of the investigation,” the district said in a statement.

Although the school might claim this is an isolated incident, the mother admitted that an administrator saw another student with tape on their face. Discussing when her son had to go to the office, the mom said, “When he went to the office to pick up that homework is when one of the administrators noticed the tape on his face. She saw another student who she thought was my son with tape on their face as well.”

As for the boy, he admitted that having a mask tapped to their face was a regular routine that has been happening since the beginning of the year.
