When it came to the time Donald Trump spent inside the White House, it was turbulent, to say the least. While he was devoted to America, both the media and the Democrats sought to do anything and everything they could to destroy the legacy he was leaving behind. One major scandal that followed Trump throughout his presidency was his tax returns. While Trump was unable to share them, The New York Times apparently pressured Mary Trump, his niece, into sharing them for a piece they were writing in 2018. Now, the former President is filing a $100 million lawsuit against both his niece and The New York Times for improperly sharing the documents.

The lawsuit states, “The brazenness of the defendants’ actions cannot be understated. A group of journalists with The New York Times, in the middle of an extensive crusade to obtain Donald J. Trump’s confidential tax records, relentlessly sought out his niece, Mary L. Trump, and convinced her to smuggle the records out of her attorney’s office and turn them over to The Times.”

Trump’s lawsuit against the news outlets also suggests the reporters on the story, Susanne Craig, David Barstow, and Russell Buettner all knew what they were doing was against the law. Not only did they offer Mary Trump anonymity for her cooperation but they also used burner phones throughout the entire process.

The original 2018 story that ran in The New York Times alleged that Trump received roughly about $413 million from his father when he was just a child. The article continued to suggest that using numerous tax schemes, Trump was able to build his fortune over the years.

NYT even said, “The Times’s coverage of Donald Trump’s taxes helped inform the public through meticulous reporting on a subject of overriding public interest. This lawsuit is an attempt to silence independent news organizations and we plan to vigorously defend against it.”

As for Mary Trump, she calls her uncle a “loser” that is only acting in “desperation”. She added, “The walls are closing in and he is throwing anything against the wall that he thinks will stick. As is always the case with Donald, he’ll try and change the subject.”
