The 2022 Midterm Election hasn’t even started and the polls are already showing it to be a gruesome night for Democrats. Thanks to the leadership of the Biden administration, America is now facing crises on every front. The southern border, the economy, COVID-19. Those are just a few. With the midterms looking bleak, it appears members of their own party are already jumping ship as Andrew Yang announced he was quitting the Democratic party, calling it “the right thing” to do.

Making the announcement on his website, Yang took the national stage when he ran for President as a Democrat. Way before his presidential bid, Yang had been a devout Democrat. Registering with the party at the age of 20, Yang would become a Democrat during former President Bill Clinton’s run for reelection against former Senator Bob Dole.

On top of making the announcement, Yang also wrote about the decision, looking back on his years as a Democrat. “Throughout my twenties, I remained a staunch Democrat, though like many others I was drawn primarily to national races. I co-hosted a small fundraiser for John Kerry’s campaign at a bar when I was 29 – I think we raised maybe $3,000.  I was thrilled to back Barack Obama’s victory in 2008 and, to a lesser extent, his re-election in 2012.” He added, “In 2016, I donated to Bernie Sanders’ campaign – everything he said struck me as true – but then voted for Hillary Clinton against Trump.”

Although listing off his achievements for the party, Yang ultimately wrote, “And yet, I’m confident that no longer being a Democrat is the right thing. Breaking up with the Democratic Party feels like the right thing to do because I believe I can have a greater impact this way.”

While Yang changed his political party to Independent, he was adamant to tell followers not to change their party just because of him. He went on to say that he believed by changing his party from Democrat, he would be able to be more critical of the system and therefore be able to get more done without being tied down.
