President Joe Biden got some bad news this week when the State Department’s inspector general confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the administration’s diplomatic operations in Afghanistan.

A memo to Secretary of State Antony Blinken that was obtained by POLITICO states that the probe will look at the State Department’s Special Immigrant Visa program; Afghans processed for refugee admission into the U.S.; resettlement of those refugees and visa recipients; and the emergency evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul “to include evacuation of U.S. citizens and Afghan nationals.”

Diana Shaw, the State Department’s acting inspector general, wrote a letter to lawmakers in Congress in which she revealed that her office is launching “several oversight projects” that pertain to the end of the U.S. military and diplomatic missions in Afghanistan.

“Given the elevated interest in this work by Congress and the unique circumstances requiring coordination across the Inspector General community, I wanted to notify our committees of jurisdiction of this important work,” Shaw wrote in her letter to lawmakers in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee. Other recipients of the letter included the intelligence committees in both chambers, among others.

State inspector general spokesperson Ryan Holden, however, tried to dispute the notion that this is part of an “investigation,” even though that’s exactly what it is.

State OIG notified its committees of jurisdiction today of planned projects in the areas you mention,” Holden said. “This work will be conducted in coordination with other members of the IG community. However, it is inaccurate to say that these projects are investigations. We indicated to Congress that these projects will be reviews.”

Mark Huffman, another spokesperson for the State Office of the Inspector General, confirmed to The Daily Caller that committees have been notified of what the office is doing.

“We have no additional information to share at this time and Acting IG Shaw is not scheduled to provide a briefing on this work,” he said.

Biden’s handling of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan has been widely panned by both sides of the political aisle. Despite this, he has defiantly stood by his decision to withdraw troops from that country.

“I was not going to extend this forever war, and I was not extending a forever exit,” Biden said during a speech from the White House in August, according to NBC News. Biden went on to say that chaos was inevitable regarding this withdrawal.
