Dr. Anthony Fauci spoke out on Sunday that he does not believe vaccine mandates for Airlines will be happening anytime soon.

“It’s always discussable. We always wind up discussing it,” Fauci said during a CNN appearance. “Right now, I don’t see that immediately.”

“I don’t want to say support or not I think it’s a decision that’s made by input from a number of parts of the government, including public health,” he continued.

“I don’t want to be weighing in, because we wind up then having people taking things out of context. We have everything on the table, and it will be discussed by the medical group,” Fauci continued.

However, Fauci has indicated in the past that he may support vaccine mandates for airline travel.

“I would support that if you want to get on a plane and travel with other people that you should be vaccinated,” Fauci said last month, according to The Hill.

U.S. Travel Association President Roger Dow has previously said that a vaccine mandate for air travel would be “extraordinarily difficult” to impose, and the U.S. airport advocacy group Airlines for America agrees with him.

“We have been informed that there is no imminent policy proposal regarding domestic travel, and echo concerns expressed by government about the implementation and enforcement of such a policy,” the group said in September. “We remain in communication with the Administration and continue to lean into science to guide policies that prioritize the safety and wellbeing of the traveling public.”

Robin Hayes, CEO of JetBlue and director of the Board of Governors for worldwide airline trade group IATA, has said that the “operational complexity” of such a mandate would be too much for the U.S. air travel system to bear.

.“I think that the complexities that come with that type of effort, especially in the domestic landscape, make it extremely challenging,” Hayes said, according to Conde Nast Traveler. “It would mean that people would have to come to the airports earlier, it would mean longer lines, it would mean more people needed to perform these functions and we’re not sure at the moment if the system is ready for that.”

Hayes went on to say that TSA would likely be tapped to verify all fliers’ vaccination cards or test results, and to question whether the agency even has the right to do this. Vaccine mandates would also be controversial in the airline world.

“The airline industry is dead set against this,” added airline expert Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research. “And given the politicization of vaccines, there are a significant number of travelers who do not want to be vaccinated, and the airlines don’t want to risk losing any of those customers.
