According to an email acquired by The Daily Wire, the Austin Independent School District (AISD), Texas’ fifth largest district, is advising parents to have their children double-up on masks in preparation for their return from Christmas break.

The email was sent out on December 29 by the district, which is now enforcing a mask mandate in direct defiance of the governor.

“With Austin ISD resuming classes as scheduled after the Winter Break, staff and families can help prevent the spread of the Omicron variant by getting boosted this week, getting tested at one of our 11 hubs beginning Monday, Jan. 3, and by double-layering masks that fit well on Wednesday when classrooms re-open,” the email said.

“If you can’t find an N95 mask, Dr. Walkes says wearing two well-fitting masks also increases your safety,”it added. Though professionals and scientific data say otherwise.

Parents in Austin were not all too happy with the news, and are wondering how long AISD will enforce the limits, which many consider to be excessive.

“It’s hard enough to keep little kids wearing one mask, how are we supposed to keep them wearing two at a time?”  said one father.

While AISD advised parents to double-mask their children, presumably following Walkes’ advice, numerous public health professionals have raised concerns about the speculative phenomena.  According to the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), some scholars rejected the report as “not backed by research.”

Time will tell just how long the mandate will remain in effect, particularly with Governor Abbott’s office not being pleased with the moves. Likewise, it is anticipated that the school system will face significant pushback from upset parents.
