The Democrat stronghold of New York City has now granted noncitizens the right to vote in municipal elections. Provided by the new measurement that was approved by the City Council on Thursday, over 800,000 green card holders and “Dreamers” now have access to the ballot box come election time. 

While the measure was approved, there is still one major step it must take before it is fully accepted, and that is getting the endorsement of Mayor Bill de Blasio. Having the power to veto the move, the Democratic mayor has already announced that he would not stand in the way of progress with a veto.

With his immigrant mother by his side, Councilman Francisco Moya, whose family comes from Ecuador, could barely hold back tears, saying, “This is for my beautiful mother who will be able to vote for her son.”

Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, the main advocate for the bill, added, “It is no secret, we are making history today. 50 years down the line when our children look back at this moment they will see a diverse coalition of advocates who came together to write a new chapter in New York City’s history by giving immigrant New Yorkers the power of the ballot.”

Not all Democrats were thrilled about the move as Lauri Cumbo, the council’s majority leader, said, “The bill we’re doing today will have national repercussions.” Cumbo believes this new measure could diminish the power and influence the African American voters currently have.  

Although most Democrats are praising the bill, City Councilman Joseph Borelli, who is currently the Republican leader, said a legal challenge will most likely happen.

Under the legal document, noncitizens who have been lawful residents of New York City for a minimum of 30 days or have been granted access to work in the U.S. can vote on council members, borough presidents, city mayors, and more.
