On May 25, 2022, many in the nation remembered the death of George Floyd while being taken into custody by police. Unfortunately, “remembering” for many included anger, hatred, pushing an anti-police narrative, and burning the American flag.

For Joe Biden, “remembering” meant bypassing Congress and signing an executive order alleged to be aimed at “police reform.” The White House adopted the order after Congress attempted to pass similar legislation, largely because the Democrats were unable to rally any support on such legislation from Republicans.

According to NBC News, “The order creates a national registry of officers fired for misconduct and encourages state and local police to tighten restrictions on chokeholds and so-called no-knock warrants. It also restricts the transfer of military equipment to law enforcement agencies and mandates all federal agents wear activated body cameras…Under the new executive order, law enforcement will be required to intervene and stop the use of excessive force when they see it and administer medical aid to those who are injured.”

It should be noted that police departments already have many of the restrictions or policies in place to address what the White House is attempting to “reform” and create “police accountability.”

Before signing the order, Biden gave a brief speech explaining that he was signing the bill because black people are scared to be alive every day. “Why this nation, why so many black Americans wake up knowing they could lose their life, of course just living their life today. Simply jogging, shopping, sleeping at home.”

Heather Mac Donald, author of the book The War on Cops, as well as several other books, appeared on Tucker Carlson to discuss the matter. While on the show, Mac Donald said, “The problem with this executive order, Tucker, is the narrative that it represents rather than the policy details…the narrative of this executive order is that we have a police racism and a police violence problem in the country. Biden takes every opportunity to reinforce that idea and the results are in, and they are unequivocal.”

“The police are not the problem in the black community,” Mac Donald said. “Criminals are.”

According to her data, homicides rose 29% after the George Floyd-inspired riots of the summer of 2020. This, she says, is the largest annual increase in American history. Further, youth homicide “rose an astounding 47%,” she said. “The victims? Overwhelmingly black.”

She further discusses the fact that police killing or shooting alleged “unarmed” black men is such a low number (six of them in 2021), that officers themselves are 400 times more likely to get shot or killed by a black person than they are to kill an unarmed black person.

She added that if people really wanted to address black people dying, she said, they would focus instead on black-on-black crime and criminals themselves. “If Biden really cared about black lives,” she said, “he would call for law and order and stop demonizing the cops.”

In his speech when signing the order, Biden first said, “I know progress can be slow and frustrating, and there’s a concern that the reckoning on race inspired two years ago is beginning to fade. Today, we’re acting. We’re showing that speaking out matters, being engaged matters, and that the work of our time, healing the soul of this nation, is ongoing and unfinished and requires all of us never to give up. Always to keep the faith.”
