During the riots that followed the untimely death of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement surged not only in America, but countries all over the world were throwing support behind their cause. At the same time, countries showed support, and a massive wave of donations started pouring in. While BLM presented itself as wanting to do what was best for the black community, the founders came under intense scrutiny when the group decided to purchase a $6 million compound in Los Angeles. Although the movement has defended the purchase and claimed that criticism was nothing more than targeted attacks, Candace Owens, host at the Daily Wire, decided to travel the property, hoping to speak with co-founder Patrisse Cullors.

While Owens wanted nothing more than a simple conversation, Cullors uploaded a video online detailing how the host was harassing her. What Cullors didn’t know, and can be seen in the video below, Owens brought her own camera with her and filmed the entire encounter. Not only was Owens not harassing Cullors, but she was polite, asking, “I was just looking to speak to whoever is at this property because it’s listed as the Black Lives Matter property? We’re not trying to harass you. We’ll gladly leave. We’re just wondering if we can speak to anybody?”

Sharing the video on Twitter, Owens tweeted, “I am pre-releasing the footage of me showing up at one of the Black Lives Matter founders, Patrisse Cullors, multiple mansions. Remember she fake cried and said I harassed her? LIAR. I kindly spoke to a white security guard (who remained silent) through a gate.” 

As for Cullors, she released her own video, crying about the harassment she supposedly received. “I really need my family to be safe. I need to be safe. I need my child to be safe, and what happened this morning is not safety.” Cullors has admitted before to using the property for personal occasions but continues to claim the residence is a meeting venue and creative space for BLM. She ultimately resigned in May 2021.

The founders of Black Lives Matter might believe reporters are harassing them, but users online didn’t see it that way, as the video below was a perfect take on the entire situation. Take a look. 

Still, as Americans criticize the movement, Black Lives Matter eventually tweeted about the narrative being pushed against them. “We know narratives like this cause harm to organizers doing brilliant work across the country, and these reports do not reflect the totality of the movement. We apologize for the distress this has caused to our supporters and those who work in service of Black liberation daily.”
