WASHINGTON, DC – According to reports [1], the Biden administration’s FDA has banned the sale of Juul electronic cigarettes, marking a huge blow to those opting to move away from the traditional, combustible tobacco products.
The FDA issued the announcement [2] of the banning of Juul products on June 23rd, delivering a broad marketing denial order “for all of their products currently marketed in the United States.”
What this marketing denial order entails is that Juul must stop all selling and distributing of their products, as well as all supply “currently on the U.S. market must be removed, or risk enforcement action.”
The irony over the ban is rich, as FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf noted in a statement that the move comes as a means to ensure e-cigarettes sold in the U.S. “meet our public health standards.”
“Today’s action is further progress on the FDA’s commitment to ensuring that all e-cigarette and electronic nicotine delivery system products currently being marketed to consumers meet our public health standards.”
Michele Mital, acting director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, also mirrored these alleged concerns about the safety of e-cigarettes, claiming that Juul hasn’t done enough to prove that their products are up to the ambiguous safety standards of the FDA.
“As with all manufacturers, JUUL had the opportunity to provide evidence demonstrating that the marketing of their products meets these standards. However, the company did not provide that evidence and instead left us with significant questions. Without the data needed to determine relevant health risks, the FDA is issuing these marketing denial orders.”
This health-related concern coming from the Biden administration’s FDA is puzzling when it pertains to vaping, as numerous health authorities have cited in studies as far back as 2014 that vaping is approximately 95% less harmful than traditional smoking [3].
But outside of claiming that the ban on Juul e-cigarette products is to make sure that they’re up to snuff health-wise, FDA Commissioner Califf invoked the infamous ‘think of the kids’ talking point in his statement.
“The agency has dedicated significant resources to review products from the companies that account for most of the U.S. market. We recognize these make up a significant part of the available products and many have played a disproportionate role in the rise in youth vaping.”
It’s difficult to ignore the irony of the Biden administration taking aim at and banning one of the most popular brands of electronic cigarettes, considering this is the same administration that used taxpayer funds to dispense free crack pipes [4].
Of course, when it was revealed that the Biden administration was doling out taxpayer funded crack pipes [5], Snopes quickly came to the defense of Biden, claiming that the characterization was “mostly false” – namely because the administration is funding crack pipes along with other things, like syringes.
