New York Yankees infielder Oswaldo Cabrera sustained a serious ankle injury in the ninth inning of Monday night’s 11-5 win over the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.

The injury brought a sudden halt to an otherwise strong performance by the Yankees.

Cabrera was attempting to score on a sacrifice fly when the incident occurred.

After sidestepping Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh to avoid a tag, Cabrera pivoted toward home plate but appeared to suffer a severe ankle injury during the movement.

He managed to touch home plate, but fell to the ground in visible pain, with his left ankle bent at an unnatural angle.

Medical personnel responded immediately.

Yankees trainer Tim Lentych was first on the scene, followed by additional medical staff who brought out a stretcher and placed Cabrera’s leg in an air cast.

Cabrera was removed from the field in an ambulance as players and fans watched in silence.

“I think everyone understands it was a pretty serious situation,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game.

“Just praying for our guy Cabby tonight and hoping for the best. Trust that he’s in good hands as he goes through the night. Obviously a great game in a lot of ways, but a lot of guys feeling for their teammate, who’s the best of them.”

Cabrera’s teammates were visibly shaken by the injury.

Several Yankees watched from the dugout with their heads in their hands as Cabrera was treated on the field.

“Especially how much Cabrera means to this team, for him to get hurt on a play like that, it speaks volumes of the type of guy he is,” Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge said.

“Everybody in here feels terrible, just because we know how much he works, how hard he works, how much he loves and cares for everybody in this room, the way he would treat every game, every day he got to be up here was such a blessing. You never like seeing that happen to anybody, but especially a guy like that that means so much to us, it’s tough.”

Cabrera, 25, has been a key part of the Yankees’ infield rotation and is known for his energy and versatility.

His injury comes just as infielder DJ LeMahieu is set to return to the lineup.

LeMahieu had been sidelined with a calf strain and was expected to primarily play second base, with Jazz Chisholm currently on the injured list.

However, following Cabrera’s injury, LeMahieu may now be called upon to take on duties at third base as well.

The Yankees have not yet provided an official diagnosis or timeline for Cabrera’s recovery. Further evaluation is expected after the team’s return to New York.
