Tish Hyman, a singer and self-described black lesbian who advocates for women’s spaces, confronted [1] Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell this week following a locker room incident at a Gold’s Gym.
Hyman was removed from the gym after objecting to a biological male entering the women’s locker room while she was undressed.
Hyman described the incident in detail on Facebook last month.
She wrote that she was naked in the women’s locker room when she turned around to see a man wearing “boy clothes” and lip gloss looking at her.
According to her account, the individual told her he was a woman and insisted she leave the women’s space.
“This person told me he was a woman and demanded that I leave the women’s locker room. He said, ‘Straight women like dick, and they’re probably looking at me more than you.’”
Hyman said Gold’s Gym staff told her they could not remove the individual.
“Gold’s Gym staff said their hands were tied by law — they couldn’t make him leave. I was naked, scared, and being yelled at. He called me a bitch in front of everyone,” she wrote.
She described a second confrontation.
“Today he saw me walk into the women’s room followed me in and called me a bitch. I ran out into the locker room crying and screaming. This is why we can’t be quiet because people need to know what’s happening. Thank you to the men who helped me today.”
Gold’s Gym reportedly terminated Hyman’s membership after the incident.
The transgender individual involved has since been identified as a convicted domestic abuser who later adopted the name of the woman he assaulted.
Hyman confronted Rep. Swalwell in person this week.
Swalwell, who is currently running for governor of California, repeatedly said, “no woman should be harassed in a locker room,” but did not state whether he opposed biological males in women’s spaces. This drew a sharper response from Hyman.
“Answer straight! Are you against men in the women’s locker rooms and sports?!” she shouted.
Hyman continued, saying, “It’s happening all over America! There are 45 men in the women’s prisons right now! Raping them! Picking them out like chicken! But trans men are not women! And they are raping women! So I don’t care if you’re on the Democrat side, the Republican side, we need to be on the women’s side, people!”
Swalwell appeared uncomfortable during the exchange while Hyman told him she had millions of people supporting her.
Earlier in November, Hyman confronted State Senator Scott Wiener, who has announced a bid for Congress.
Wiener authored legislation allowing judges discretion over sex-offender registration requirements involving same-sex minors and supported a bill making California a “sanctuary state” for minors seeking gender-related medical procedures without parental consent.
“I’m a black lesbian!” Hyman shouted as she challenged him over the legislation he backed.
She left the room after repeatedly stating that “trans women are men — NOT women.”
Had a chance to have a conversation with Senator Weiner. It was an honest one. I am hopeful that this is the first of many conversations we will have regarding women’s safety .
Senator Weiner said he likes working with fresh young people and that he is open to ideas.
