Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd criticized the mayor of Minneapolis and defended the actions of federal law enforcement following an incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, saying accountability must begin with elected officials and warning that violent resistance against officers can result in lethal consequences.

Judd addressed the incident after being asked by media outlets to comment on events that occurred in Minneapolis, where federal law enforcement officers were involved in a confrontation with an occupant of a vehicle.

“Hello everyone. Chef. Grady Judd here, I’ve been asked by media outlets and several people to comment on the event that occurred in Minneapolis yesterday,” Judd said.

Judd said responsibility for public rhetoric and conduct starts with city leadership, sharply criticizing comments made by the mayor.

“Let me make one thing abundantly clear, you have to be accountable for your conduct, and that starts with the mayor,” Judd said.

“Did you hear his filthy talk? Did you hear his filthy, uninformed talk yesterday to the people, not only of the city and the state, but across the nation?”

He condemned the mayor’s remarks as unprofessional.

“Shame on you. That’s lack of professionalism,” Judd said.

Judd noted that the investigation into the incident is ongoing but said he wanted to provide context based on video footage he reviewed.

“Now let’s look at the event the investigation is not complete,” Judd said.

“I am giving you context on the video clip that I saw.”

According to Judd, the footage shows federal officers attempting to remove an occupant from a vehicle before the situation escalated.

“Law enforcement officers, federal law enforcement officers, ICE agents were trying to take the occupant of the car out of the vehicle,” Judd said.

Judd said the vehicle was then used as a weapon against an ICE agent.

“During this encounter, the vehicle backed up and then drove directly at the ICE agent,” Judd said.

“That is a deadly weapon, a two ton deadly weapon.”

He said the actions taken by the occupant should have led to an expected response from law enforcement.

“So what did the occupant expect?” Judd said.

“They should have expected to be shot when you commit a deadly assault on a law enforcement officer.”

Judd called for clear messaging from state and local leaders encouraging cooperation with law enforcement.

“So let’s do this,” Judd said.

“Let’s send out the message loud and clear, and it should start with the mayor, the police chief, the local sheriff and the governor of Minnesota cooperate with law enforcement officers.”

He warned against resisting officers or engaging in violent behavior during law enforcement encounters.

“Don’t resist them. Don’t violently resist them,” Judd said.

Judd concluded by emphasizing the consequences of using a vehicle or other means to assault officers.

“If you do violently resist them, if you do felonious assaults with two ton weapons expect to be shot,” he said.
