Hollywood star Adam Sandler earned some of the best critical reviews of his career in last year’s hit film Uncut Gems, but he’s just revealed that he nearly lost his life working on the movie.

Fox News reported that in the movie, Sandler played Howard Ratner, a Diamond District jeweler in New York City who is addicted to gambling. Sandler just sat down with Entertainment Weekly along with the movie’s directors Josh and Benny Safdie, who revealed that two actors who played bodyguards beating up Sandler’s character got a little too rough while “manhandling” him.

“Sandler’s so in it, he’s so into the character that it started to actually get a little scary one or two times, because he’s getting choked at one point in the scene and there were all these cues,” Josh said. “There was one take when Sandler was getting choked and he was trying to tap out, but the actor thought he was just being Howard so he choked harder, and Adam couldn’t breathe.”

They went on to say that the two actors were Keith William Richards and Tommy Kominik, neither of whom had ever done a movie before, but they both were “very professional.”

Sandler confirmed that he went home with lots of bruises that night. Despite this, he still had a great time making the movie.

“I love these guys, I love ’em. I mean, they’re incredible filmmakers,” Sandler said. “I love having these new friends, we talk all the time, and I think they’re just great, great people.”

Sandler added that he would “die to work with them again,” showing that there is no bad blood there.

This comes months after Sandler’s co-star Julia Fox, who played his girlfriend in the movie, talked to reporters about what it was like to work with the actor. She added that there was one change that Sandler made to the movie after filming got under way.

“My character’s name was originally supposed to be Sadie,” Fox said. “But that’s his daughter’s name, so he actually had it switched for that to make it easier on the girls.”
