Kyle Rittenhouse, the young man accused of murder during the recent riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, seems to have acted in self defense. His assailants were members of an armed mob who were assaulting him while he was on the ground. He had a genuine fear for his life and acted in the only rational way possible given the situation.

Let’s go over the evidence of this contention, using as our source the best newspaper in the United States, the Wall Street Journal.

According to the Journal, “In a video taken Tuesday night by Richard McGinniss, a journalist with the Daily Caller, Mr. Rittenhouse is seen with a rifle and a medic kit, saying he is out to protect local businesses. At that point, Kenosha had experienced violent unrest for two nights that left businesses burned, looted and damaged…’People are getting injured, and our job is to protect this business, and part of my job is to also help people,’ Mr. Rittenhouse said in the video. ‘If there’s somebody hurt, I’m running into harm’s way. That’s why I have my rifle, because I need to protect myself, but I also have my med kit. ‘ ”

Why would a teenage killer bring a medical kit to his murder scene? Why would this same young man, only a day earlier, engage in community clean up efforts? Did Ted Bundy or Charlie Manson beautify parks before their killing sprees? Are those the actions of an adolescent maniac spoiling for a fight?

The Journal on the shooting: “Prosecutors cite another video showing Mr. Rittenhouse running, as people yell and chase him. Mr. Rittenhouse trips and falls to the ground, firing at Anthony Huber, who is holding a skateboard and is trying to grab Mr. Rittenhouse’s gun, the complaint alleges…Mr. Rittenhouse also fired upon an approaching Gaige Grosskreutz, who was hit in the right arm, the complaint alleges. Mr. Grosskreutz appeared to be holding a handgun as he was shot.”

So Kyle Rittenhouse fends off one attack. Then while on the ground after tripping he is set upon by another assailant. Then after that still another attacker, armed with a handgun, tries to assault him. All Rittenhouse does is to try and protect himself by fighting back. Doesn’t that constitute sufficient grounds for self defense? Of course it does. Hopefully, a fair jury will see it the same way.
