Since the historic upset of the 2016 election, voters and parties alike have taken harsh stands when it comes to the way Americans cast their votes. Add in the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that the Democrat’s have a low-energy candidate and the discussion is louder than ever.

No matter the outcome of any election, a recount is usually called, and voter fraud is hurled by the opposing side. While “human error” will always factor into the method in which Americans vote, many are stunned by the recent primary election held in Michigan. An unacceptable 72% of absentee precincts in Detroit had ballot counts that were out of balance. But what does that mean exactly?

When an election takes place, votes are counted and tracked in precinct poll books. This measure is supposed to help fight against a system of rigged elections. When the numbers don’t add up, human error or fraud are usually the culprits. The problem with the voting in Michigan is the state law which prohibits a recount if the precinct’s poll books do not add up to the ballots cast.

With the Presidential election a few months away, citizens are calling the primary election results “alarming” and “concerning.” Some are even demanding Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson step in and overlook the voting in fall, but two of the Republican board members assigned to certifying statewide election results want a thorough investigation, and with that percentage of error who can blame them.

One of the Republicans, Norm Shinkle said, “I think we need an investigation with a conclusion that somebody else is going to run that election or not.”

Voting by mail has been a hot topic over the past couple of months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With many voters expected to cast their nomination via mail, analysts aren’t sure the system is ready or has the manpower to handle the election properly. Further complicating the issue is the unwillingness of Democrats and the mainstream media to distinguish the stark difference between absentee ballots and universal mail-in ballots, the latter being extremely susceptible to fraud.

While voters want nothing more than a fair and honest voting system, it seems not all are worried about the recent events in Michigan. The state’s election director, Jonathan Brater, seemed to fight back against the notion of an investigation.

Even two of the Democrats sitting on the voting board had very little to say when it came to the matter. Board Chairwomen Jeannette Bradshaw and Julie Matuzak called the results appalling, disheartening, and alarming but gave little evidence of a proposed inquiry into the election results.
