The Democratic National Convention has come and gone, and it did so without mention or condemnation of the violence in the streets of our once proud American cities.

Portland, Seattle, Chicago and several others continue to be ravaged by violent and destructive anarchists who care little about George Floyd’s death at this point, and a great deal more about causing mayhem as groups like Black Lives Matter and Antifa are chartered to do.

And despite the overt commitment from these groups to destroy both city and private property in said cities, Democrat leadership has allowed the behavior to go on unchecked -with the exception of rioting near their homes of course.

Earlier this week we reported on how Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot came out and said that no protests would be allowed on her street, even going so far as stationing 100 police officers in the area to protect her livelihood. This as the city’s police department is already stretched thin and facing warzone-like conditions in certain districts.

Still, Lightfoot defended her actions saying, “Given the threats to my home and my family, I’m gonna do everything to make sure that they are protected. I make no apologies whatsoever.”

When asked to elaborate on the threats made against her family, Mayor Lightfoot fell into the usual Democratic rhetoric of sidestepping by claiming, “Every single day, there is something that pops up. There are specific threats to my person, to my wife, and to our home.”

Taking a different approach than we have seen in Chicago or in Portland under Ted Wheeler and Governor Kate Brown, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee came out with legislative action that would shut such horrid behavior down before it can even get out of control.

Lee and the state government passed HB8005, which will dramatically increases the punishment for individuals that take part in violent protests, looting, and destruction.

According the Associated Press, the law will prevent camping or loitering on state property and those who break the law will be charged with a class E felony.  Such behavior previously resulted in a misdemeanor.  Violators could also face up to six years in prison and lose their right to vote, per Tennessee state law with regards to felonies.

While there already has been pushback to the bill, this type of leadership is what will be required to see our way out of these violent and destructive protests, and start the road to recovery.
