In the Senate Democrats flipped two with the loss of Corey Gardner in Colorado and Martha McSally in Arizona. That elected Democrats John Hickenlooper and Mark Kelly, respectively. Hickenlooper is a moderate former Colorado governor and Kelly is an astronaut and the husband of former Democrat Rep. Gabby Gifford, who was the victim of a shooting while in office. Kelly represents a purple state, so like his fellow Democrat Senator from Arizona Kristen Sinema, he will be moderate. Hickenlooper, though moderate, will represent an increasingly blue state and may vote accordingly.

We may flip a Democrat Senate seat in Michigan if John James wins, but definitely flipped Alabama as former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville beat Democrat Doug Jones. Thank God Mitch McConnell had the votes to let Susan Collins vote no on Amy Coney Barrett. That gave her the edge in Maine to keep her seat. So, Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham will continue to plague the Democrats.

In the House all kinds of Democrat incumbents lost. Max Rose in New York, Joe Cunningham in South Carolina, Donna Shalala in Florida, and Colin Peterson in Minnesota, to name four. We may take out Abigail Spanberger in Virginia as well.

After the smoke clears we’ll pick up several seats in the House, making it easier for Trump, or harder for Biden, to get legislation passed out of the lower chamber.

The success came from targeting. Democrats in congressional races attack everywhere and thus attack nowhere. They spent $85 million dollars in Kentucky to unseat Mitch McConnell in a Senate race McConnell was always going to win. Not big on asset allocation, Democrats. They just throw cash and candidates against a wall and hope they stick. Many times they don’t.

Republicans pick their fights and not only use sledgehammers when called for, but also are adept with scalpels. They localize races and have more than one tired used appeal like “Orange Man Bad” to woo voters. That’s why they did well Tuesday and the Democrats did not.
