Living here in Annapolis, the capitol of Maryland, the feel is not really Reb or Yankee. It’s more preppy English fishing village and DC bedroom community. But apparently we have a state song that, while kind of amusing, is a tad too secessionist. Some want to lose it. Fine. Just don’t replace it with PC blather.

FNC: “After decades of debate, legislators are finally sensing strong support for repealing Maryland’s state song, a Civil War-era call to arms for the Confederacy against ‘Northern scum’ (heh heh heh-LZ) that refers to President Abraham Lincoln as a despot. ‘Maryland, My Maryland,’ set to the traditional seasonal tune of ‘O, Tannenbaum,’ was written as a poem in 1861 by James Ryder Randall and adopted as the state song in 1939. Lawmakers have tried to replace it since 1974. This year’s nationwide protests against racial injustice may have made the difference.”
Okay, “Northern Scum” (Though, have you ever met a modern New Yorker?) is overkill. Sure, they’re loud and boorish, but hardly scum. They’re mostly just annoying. So let’s bounce that part. Plus, just like the national anthem, the melody for the ditty is swiped. No points there.

The Maryland House Speaker chimed in. “Confederate-sympathizing language is not representative of who we are as a state any longer,” said Democrat Adrienne Jones. “This session, we will pass legislation to repeal the state song so we can better reflect our current values of unity, diversity and inclusion. We have come too far as a state and as a country to continue to embrace symbols of hate and division.” Uh oh. “Diversity and inclusion.” Yikes. It’ll be a 435 stanza percussion only epic poem dedicated to Huey Newton.
What’s all the fuss about? The current state tune begins with a hostile reference to Lincoln: “The despot’s heel is on thy shore, Maryland! His torch is at thy temple door, Maryland!” Well, he did suspend habeas corpus and all. But despot? Nah. More Lord Protector.
It ends with a straight up call to be rude, and also strangely frisky, to tourists. “She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-Huzzah! She spurns the Northern scum! She breathes! she burns! she’ll come! she’ll come! Maryland! My Maryland!” Yeah, it’s too weird. Even if it’s a bit of a history rewrite, drop it like a live grenade.
