Mitch McConnell is on the president’s naughty list. McConnell, Bill Barr, the Republican Party, the DOJ, John Durham, and the Supreme Court are all targets of a Saturday wild and haphazard Trump Twitter broadsides. All people and institutions you would think would be pro-Trump or fair to him, the president now surprisingly disdains, if not loathes. Why?

It could be, and would seem to the casual observer, because of disloyalty.

But it could be something else. With such a scattershot approach to his criticism he’s either losing it, a distinct possibility, or he’s setting up a victimhood narrative for 2024. Which means he knows damned well he lost 2020 but needs to make his people feel the loss and bitterness to such an over the top level that they will do anything for him in 2024. If history had been different, it would be like retired General Robert E. Lee crisscrossing the nation in anticipation of running for president against Abraham Lincoln (yes, this is before the 22nd Amendment), in 1868. For some think, how is it a lost cause if the leader of it is still in the field plugging away? How? Because he is using them.

Could this be a Trump scam perpetrated on his bitter ender followers? Yes. He’s getting them all riled up for nothing and he knows it. To pull off this trick the president needs lots of enemies to populate his rogues gallery. That’s why he named all the targets above. One for every taste. One from column A, one from column B. A dim sum of villains. If you like Bill Barr there is McConnell to hate. Like McConnell? Maybe you’re suspicious of Neil Gorsuch. And so on.

The president wants to turn that targeted anger into a bitterness towards the Republican establishment, hence mainly going after McConnell, that will fuel a 2024 primary victory. But, is the president alienating a lot of Republicans by his bitter ender actions now? Very possibly, which could make an only bitter ender primary base problematic per victory.

It’s also the reason he’s lining up with Pelosi, Schumer, and AOC on the stimulus cash amount. It makes McConnell’s job harder. The president is reverting to his pirate populist outsider roots. Problem is, after you’ve been president, that dog doesn’t hunt.
