The Trump impeachment is bringing out quasi-dormant disagreements in the Republican Party over tone, substance, and Donald Trump. Some, playing to their home base, want to continue to support Trump. Others want to move on and put Trump and his controversies behind them as much as possible, given the current wreckage in the party. The contention over Liz Cheney and her impeachment vote is part of that struggle. It won’t end anytime soon.

FNC: “Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., pushed back against fellow Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, Wednesday after the congressman defended Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., the highest-ranking woman in the house, for her vote to impeach President Trump. ‘With all due respect to Rep. Crenshaw, this is a minority view within the minority party,’ Gaetz tweeted to Crenshaw.”

Which is odd, as Gaetz has it completely turned around. Gaetz is an ambitious politician who is aboard a sinking ship in the same minority party. Crenshaw is a highly decorated Navy SEAL who saw action in the War in Afghanistan. His views on leadership thus are much more credibile than the hair product-laden representative from Florida.

As such, Crenshaw said, “Let’s get some truth on the record: @Liz_Cheney has a hell of a lot more backbone than most, & is a principled leader with a fierce intellect.”

Crenshaw, like Cheney, criticized Trump for his role in encouraging the assault on the Capital, “we can’t ignore the President’s behavior leading up to the violence in the Capitol last week. He bears enormous responsibility for it.” He did not vote for impeachment.

Liz Cheney herself commented, “There has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution…I’m not going anywhere…This is a vote of conscience. It’s one where there are different views in our conference.”

After she voted for impeachment, Cheney told Wyoming media, “the defense of our Constitution, the defense of this republic, the defense of the peaceful transfer of power, ensuring that the Constitution and the constitutional duties we all have are carried out, must never be partisan.” Wiser words than any from Gaetz.
