Authorities say the man shot the woman and turned toward the direction of one of the officers, still armed.  An officer immediately fired at the suspect and he was hit.  The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Howayne Gayle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured.  The 37-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified, was taken to a hospital where she later died of her injuries.

Lakeland Police determined the woman and Gayle had broken up recently, and that Gayle arrived at the residence today where the victim and her 19-year-old daughter live.  When the suspect broke into the townhouse, the victim went outside and Gayle followed her.
