There is no denying the damage done by the COVID-19 pandemic. What was only supposed to last a few weeks turned into a year as Democrats pushed useless mandates and lockdowns. With some states somehow still battling the virus, many Americans and small businesses are in need of financial assistance to help get them back on their feet. And while President Joe Biden might be eager to help, it appears the funds that should be helping Americans are actually going to the hit Broadway musical – Hamilton.

For those that don’t know, Hamilton, written by liberal Lin-Manuel Miranda, opened its doors back in 2015. From the start, Hamilton was a huge success as it played to sold-out crowds at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The production would go on to have five shows touring around the country. Now granted, this was all before the pandemic and it appears the show that grossed $650 million on Broadway alone, is in need of some assistance.

According to the New York Times, each production of Hamilton applied for $10 million in pandemic relief aid. And even crazier, three of the five productions have been approved. That’s $30 million going to a show that easily made over $1 billion during its run.

Surprisingly, the musical was eligible for federal aid under the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant. The grant was created to help the arts and entertainment industry like museums, cinemas, and performing arts. It should also be noted that the grant is controlled by the U.S. Small Business Administration, which begs the question – what is small about Hamilton?

What is even more interesting is how Hamilton and Miranda are happy to take federal aid, but just a few years back attacked former President Donald Trump. In 2019, Miranda said, “Your occasional reminder that our current president lies as easy as you and I breathe air. Every day, all day, reflexively.”

Since then, Miranda has had a change of heart, not only campaigning for Joe Biden during the 2020 election but also appearing in a political ad geared towards Puerto Rican voters. But then again, when there is $50 million on the line, what else is Miranda going to do?
