With the White House failing to meet President Joe Biden’s vaccine goal, the Democrats have been anxiously finding ways to try and get people vaccinated. According to health experts, the country needs at least a 70% vaccination rate to achieve some semblance of herd immunity. So far, they have been able to get only 47% of Americans fully vaccinated. Hoping A-list celebrities and sports stars would help convince people, it appears American swimmer Michael Andrew isn’t buying their narrative as he confirmed recently that he would NOT be getting vaccinated ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.

Scheduled to represent Team USA in the 200-meter medley, the 50-meter freestyle, and the 100-meter breaststroke, Andrew stunned reporters when he announced he would not be seeking the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the Washington Post, Andrew revealed he contracted COVID-19 late in 2020. “So my thought pattern is kind of like, if I’ve already got it, there’s not as much health risk for me,” he said. “Just because everyone’s heading in one direction, why do we have to follow that direction?”

Reiterating his stance about the virus, Andrew told reporters, “My reason behind it is— for one, it was in the last moment I didn’t want to put anything in my body that I didn’t know how I would potentially react to. As an athlete on the elite level, everything we do is very calculated. For me in the training cycles and especially at trials, I didn’t want to risk any days out, because there are periods where if you take a vaccine, you have to deal with some days off.”

Although Andrew will not get the vaccine, he did say he would comply with any measures put in place for unvaccinated athletes. “All of us here have been through very strict protocols, with lots of testing, masks, socially distant, staying away from crowds — everything like that. Going into Tokyo, the same thing, with testing every day. So we feel very safe and protected, knowing that we’re minimizing risk as much as possible. But personally, I have not had the vaccine yet and don’t plan on it in the distant future.”

As for now, the Olympic games are still scheduled for this year, but there will be no attendance present due to rising COVID-19 cases in Japan. The country has even declared a state of emergency recently.
