Although the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is over, the toy company Mattel wanted to celebrate all the athletes who participated in the postponed Olympic games. Even with the games garnering historical low ratings, there were still memorable moments that will always be remembered. With that in mind, the toymakers released a new line of dolls that show all the empowering female athletes who participated. The only problem, people were quick to point out that Mattel forgot to include an Asain doll since the games were held in Tokyo.  But according to the company, they actually included an Asain doll that some are claiming isn’t Asian enough.

In the tweet below, Mattel revealed their new line of Barbies with the caption, “Barbie is committed to empowering girls to participate in sports by capturing the fun and friendship of the season, and inspiring kids to find the athlete within.”

As you can see in the picture above, the five new dolls show a variety of not just ethnicities but also sports. While some Twitter users praised the company for their efforts in encouraging young girls to pursue their dreams, others bashed Mattel for not including an Asian girl, but as mentioned above – the company actually did.

One user, who blasted Mattel tweeted, “According to Mattel you can can anything , but ASIAN if you want to be included. The Olympics is literally happening in Asia. An Asian countries has the most gold medals. An Asian-American won gold in one of the biggest and most poplar event. Talk about tone deaf. Do much better!”

Another user said, “Where is the Asian Barbie? You needed two white Barbies? Why? Most of the American women winning [medals] are not white . Why is it always the Asian Barbies that you don’t have ?!?”

Even the critics had something to say about the supposed absence of an Asain doll. “Wow. Wordless. Olympics in an Asian country yet zero attempt to represent any Asians in your collection. Shame on you.”

Having to explain themselves and even apologize for not making the doll “Asain enough”, a spokesperson for Mattel said, “Our intention to represent the Asian community with the Skateboarder doll fell short and we fully receive and recognize the feedback. Moving forward, we will work to find more ways to champion all representation and celebrate the amazing achievements of all Olympic athletes, who are showing us that anything is possible.”

Although the company had to apologize for a mistake they didn’t make, critics continued to blast the company for being tone-deaf.
