Disney has always been known for creating magic and captivating the mind. There is no place more magical than one of their several parks. But while close to 34,000 guests packed Shanghai’s Disneyland, enjoying food, family, rides, and fireworks – the staff were secretly working with the Chinese government to lock all the guests inside. Again, that is over 30,000 people. It wasn’t until the venue was swarming with authorities wearing hazmat-suits, that guests started to grow concerned. According to Bloomberg, every guest was subjected to a mandatory COVID-19 test before being allowed to leave.

While a scary situation to witness, the Wall Street Journal reported that a woman had visited the park a day earlier and was found to be infected with COVID-19. China, much like Australia, has a “zero tolerance” policy when it comes to fighting the coronavirus.

The Journal reported, “The world’s most populous nation has committed to maintaining “zero tolerance” for the virus despite criticism from business groups, a close to 80% vaccination rate, and a world which is gradually learning to live with Covid-19. China is taking stringent measures to contain pockets of the coronavirus in the country. It recorded 48 domestic cases on Saturday across several provinces. Though extremely low compared with countries that are moving to live with the virus, the infections have prompted business closures and mass testing in certain areas.”

As people were definitely concerned about the situation, many started to film the ordeal and how they had to stand in line to get tested. One visitor told reporters, “I never thought that the longest queue in Disneyland would be for a nucleic acid test.”

The situation didn’t end there as although every guest tested negative, each of them was taken in special buses where they were quarantined for two days at home. They were also tested repeatedly over the next two weeks.

What remains of the park? The shopping and dining areas known as Disneytown will be closed till Wednesday.
