Just ahead of the holidays, the CEO of the digital mortgage company Better.com, Vishal Garg, decided that Christmas time was the ideal setting to fire more than 900 employees. Being fired right before the holidays is already crushing, but making sure to follow COVID-19 mandates, Garg decided to fire all the employees over a single Zoom call. Making up around 15% of his workforce, Garg would continue to say that it isn’t his fault due to some staffers working only two hours a day.

In the video, which can be watched below, Garg sits casually in his office chair and lets 900 people know they no longer have a job. And again, Christmas is only 17 days away. But instead of feeling sorry for their situation and hoping for the best, Garg decided to pour salt on the wound by suggesting that over 250 employees only worked an average of two hours a day, placing the blame on them.

Garg wouldn’t stop there as he later wrote on a site called Blind, “You guys know that at least 250 of the people terminated were working an average of 2 hours a day while clocking in 8 hours+ a day in the payroll system? They were stealing from you and stealing from our customers who pay the bills that pay our bills. Get educated.”

Not wasting any time, Garg would later point out the future of his company with a better “workforce”. “I think they could have been phrased differently, but honestly the sentiment is there.” Shortly after firing over 900 employees, Garg addressed the company in a live stream in which he laid out a vision of what he referred to as “Better2.0,” with a “leaner, meaner, hungrier workforce.”

According to Garg, he warned workers of the potential layoffs, stating, “If you felt in the past that people weren’t looking — well, everyone is looking now.”
