It is the end of an era, and no, it isn’t about Tom Brady retiring. On Monday, the Democratic Representative from New York, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, announced on Instagram that she would be taking a break from Twitter. That’s right, from the moment AOC was elected, the Representative has been a constant influence on the social media site. Some even claimed she spent more time on Twitter than doing her job. But either way, AOC admitted that being on the platform has left her anxious, especially after the backlash she has received from being caught maskless several times.

Although AOC has been recovering from a case of COVID-19, she answered a comment about her silence on Twitter. She noted, “That’s so funny that you bring that up. Yeah when I got covid I turned off all my devices, which means I wasn’t really on social media that much or anything like that.”

AOC added that the level of negativity of the site led to her taking a break. “And I found that when I went to open Twitter up again, it just like wasn’t really making me…Literally, I would go to open the app and I almost felt like, anxious. People like, kind of fight and gossip, and all this other stuff so much. But, and there’s a lot of negative negativity on there, but I’ll be back. Don’t worry. Just a break.”

Before AOC decided to take a step away from social media, it should be noted that during her Christmas break, the Representative vacationed in South Florida where she was shown not wearing a mask or social distancing.

It wouldn’t be long after, on January 9th, that AOC announced that she had contracted COVID-19 while supposedly having all her shots and boosters.

While AOC has decided to stop tweeting, she reassured those who still follow her that this is nothing more than a small break and she will once again return to spread her message to the platform that continues to silence and censor people.
