It is apparent that the 2022 Winter Olympics, which is being held in Beijing, isn’t drawing much of a crowd as the opening ceremonies saw its ratings dive 43% below previous Olympics. With the criticism of the Chinese Communist Party taking center stage in the months leading up to the Olympics, it appears many fans and people around the world are silently protesting by simply not watching. And for those who happened to tune in, like former co-host of “The View”, Meghan McCain, it seemed the games were being held on a site that resembled “Chernobyl”.

Surprised by the locations, McCain blamed the International Olympic Committee, writing, “‘Cataclysmic’: Olympics opening ceremonies TV ratings plunge to new low – 43% below previous Olympics. This is the best way of punishing the amoral Western sponsors who prioritized profits over morals.”

McCain added, “Look at this photo – this is where the global community thought it was best to host the Olympics. It looks like [Chernobyl] with a ski slope. #GenocideGames (I am not watching, this photo was posted online).”

In the photo, which can be seen in McCain’s post, the FreeStyle skiing slope appeared to be placed in front of four concrete structures. While the former hosts claimed it looked like Chernobyl, Reuters was sure to clear confusion by noting it was an old steel mill.

The pictures from McCain wouldn’t be the only time she called out the Olympics being held in China. She also tweeted, “There is no reason to watch a Winter Olympics that is holding up and spreading propaganda for a regime that is committing actual genocide and ethnic cleansing [of Uyghurs] – on top of poisoning the world and killing 6 million people. Absolute shame on the international community for this.”

Although the U.S. has labeled China’s treatment of the Uyghur Muslims as genocide, many countries, including America, have decided to only diplomatically boycott the 2022 Winter Games.
