Although Presidents’ Day was first recognized as a federal holiday back in 1879 and before that was used to honor George Washington, it appears the celebration dating back almost 150 years is now under scrutiny from cancel culture. While there have been no issues before, on Monday, Politico printed an article called, “It’s Time To Cancel Presidents Day”. The article suggested that the day does a “disservice to history” with it being “less a show of genuine respect for American history than an insult to it.” Although hurling several reasons to cancel the day, their main reason surrounded one particular individual and former President.

According to Politico, Presidents’ Day has become irrelevant due to not a lack of interest, but because it takes into account the Trump administration. While there have been 46 Presidents in America’s history, including Joe Biden, the article only focused on Donald Trump and how celebrating his time in office takes away from the “racial reckoning” of the George Floyd murder.

Offering no alternative to the day or ways to better celebrate America’s rich history, Politico simply suggested canceling it.

The presidency itself, like so many aspects of American culture, is now in the middle of ideological crossfire between left and right. Is there a way that the center can find its voice in arguments about the presidency?

Yes, there is. A good way to start would be to cancel the day we mark today: “Presidents Day.”

The name suggests we honor Lincoln and Washington no less than Richard Nixon or Warren G. Harding or Donald Trump.

While Politico wanted to cancel the holiday, it did add that Americans should “keep a day off to reflect on lessons of the American past”. They were sure to include that the past meant remembering George Floyd and “real history”. As for Trump, they believe his legacy was nothing more than a “mythological history, an invitation to arrogance and complacency.”
